Soil Testing Procedures

  • ASTM C702 / AASHTO T248: Sample Reduction
  • Sample ReductionTest Purpose:
  • To reduce samples to testing size for other physical tests.
  • Sample Preparation:
  • Sample size varies depending on the physical test being performed.
  • Special Considerations:
  • None.
  • Estimated Testing Length:
  • Normally 24 hours or less.
  • Prerequisite Tests:
  • None
  • Other Comments:
  • None

  • ASTM C29 / AASHTO T19: Bulk Density (Unit Weight) and Voids in Aggregate
  • Test Purpose:
  • To determine the bulk density of a material in either a loose or a dense state, while also determining the percent of voids between the aggregate.
  • Sample Preparation:
  • Sample size varies based on maximum nominal size of aggregate. Contact our laboratory to determine minimum sample size needed.
  • Special Considerations:
  • This method does not cover aggregate particles that are larger than 5-inches in average diameter.
  • Estimated Testing Length:
  • Normally 3 days or less.
  • Other Comments:
  • None

  • ASTM C128  / AASHTO T84: Specific Gravity of Fine Aggregate
  • Test Purpose:
  • To determine the bulk and apparent specific gravity of a fine aggregate sample.
  • Sample Preparation:
  • A minimum of 1000 grams of sample is required for this procedure.
  • Special Considerations:
  • None.
  • Estimated Testing Length:
  • Normally 3 days or less.

  • To determine the gradation of a specified aggregate.
